Futh, a middle-aged Englishman recently separated from his wife, sets off across the North Sea on a ferry, planning to restore himself on a walking holiday in Germany. In his pocket is a small silver perfume case in the shape of a lighthouse. On the way his thoughts keep circling back to the mother who walked out on him in childhood, to the women his father pursued and his wife's betrayals, and to an earlier trip to Germany with his father, newly alone, when there was something he failed to do. Meanwhile Ester, unhappily married to a German hotelier, has affairs in the hope of making her husband notice her, and the two stories gradually converge.
