Saeed and Nadia meet in a classroom in a city crowded with refugees, where war has not yet broken out in the open but every night brings bombs closer, along with curfews and executions. As the fighting between militants and the state spreads, they fall in love, and word goes round of black doors hidden around the city that open onto other places. After violence reaches Saeed's family, the couple pass through one, joining migrants who move from an overcrowded camp on Mykonos to an empty London mansion full of other newcomers and on to California. In each place their bond is strengthened and strained by the search for food, shelter and belonging, and by locals who wish they would simply disappear.
