In 1914 the infant twins Marian and Jamie Graves are saved from a liner going down at sea and are raised by a dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. Stunt pilots touring the area set Marian on a lifelong passion for flight. At fourteen she leaves school and accepts the backing of a rich bootlegger, who pays for her plane and lessons, a bargain that will shadow her life. She flies Spitfires in the war, and in 1950 she sets out to circle the globe over both poles and disappears. Decades later Hadley Baxter, a scandal-hit actress who lost her own parents in an air crash, is cast as Marian, and the two women's stories run side by side.
