Tom Layward, fifty-five, is a law professor in New York. More than a decade ago his wife Amy confessed she had been seeing someone from their synagogue, and Tom quietly resolved to walk out once their two children were grown. Now he leaves their younger child, Miri, at her college in Pittsburgh and, rather than turning back, heads west. He is unwell with long Covid, and his university has suspended him for declining to add pronouns to his work emails. Driving across the country he stops in on relatives, old friends and former girlfriends, weighs an offer to advise on a dubious case about bias against white basketball players, and looks at himself through other people's eyes with rueful humour while thinking about how much time he has left.
