It is December 1962 in a remote English village. Eric Parry, the local GP, drives out to see patients, and Irene, his wife, who is expecting, wanders their old house thinking about how far apart they have grown. Across a bare field Rita Simmons, quick-witted, restless and also pregnant, is trying to settle into life as a farmer's wife, though she cannot shake memories of a wild earlier life that her husband Bill prefers not to mention. Neither couple has given up on love yet. Once the two women meet, though, a countdown begins, and when ordinary December cold turns into the worst winter in memory, with snowstorms that cut the village off, the grievances each of the four has kept quiet start to surface.
