In Berlin and then Paris in 1939 and 1940, the bassist Sid Griffiths and his friend Chip, a drummer, play in a band whose rising star is Hieronymus Falk, a twenty-year-old trumpeter who is German, Black and therefore a target under Nazi racial laws. After Paris falls, Hiero is arrested in a café and disappears without trace, and Sid is the only witness. In 1992 Chip talks Sid, now an old man, into going back to Berlin for a documentary about Falk. A mysterious letter that Chip produces turns the trip into something else, bringing up secrets buried since that day and questions of loyalty, betrayal and who gets to tell the story.
