On their honeymoon Viktor Landauer, a wealthy Jewish businessman, and his thoughtful, modern wife Liesel meet the architect Rainer von Abt, who designs them a house for a new age: steel, onyx and glass on a Czechoslovak hillside, built around a vast, transparent Glass Room. Children arrive, and friends, artists and new ideas fill the rooms. But Viktor seeks easier comfort with another woman, Liesel looks to her reckless friend Hana for excitement, and by the late 1930s war is coming. When German troops march in, the Landauers have to escape, taking along Viktor's mistress and her young child, while the house changes owners, Czech, Nazi and Soviet, and casts its spell on each new occupant.
