Sonia, who has just finished college in wintry Vermont, dreams of being a novelist. Her affair with Ilan, a painter three decades older who cuts her off from everyone in New York, leaves her convinced he has cursed her, and she retreats to her parents in India. Sunny works as a reporter in New York, uneasy about his American girlfriend and about reporting from a place he no longer belongs to, and keen to get away from his domineering mother and his quarrelling relatives. Long ago their grandparents tried to set the two of them up, a clumsy scheme that only kept them apart. When chance puts them on the same night train, the attraction is immediate. The novel moves between India and the United States and into the stories of their relatives as the pair try to find some happiness despite nation, class, race and the past.
