Trelawny is the younger son of Topper and Sanya, who came to Miami from Jamaica, and nobody around him, his family included, seems sure where a boy of his complexion fits. He goes north to study in the colder, less mixed Midwest, then returns to a run of strange and shady ways of earning money, one of which has him spying on a rich couple. His elder brother Delano, who works with trees, makes music and is their father's favourite, will do whatever it takes to give his own children a better life, including rushing to win a big job cutting trees ahead of a hurricane. Other stories follow their cousin Cukie, who goes out lobster fishing with a father he barely knows and learns more than that trade. Over the course of the book the brothers grow ever further apart.
