Maali Almeida, who photographs the war, gambles and hides that he is gay, finds himself dead, in what looks like a visa office for the afterlife. His body, cut to pieces, lies at the bottom of Colombo's Beira Lake, and he does not know who murdered him. In a Sri Lanka at civil war, where killers for hire, bombers and state death squads settle scores, there are far too many suspects, and the spirits crowding around him all have grudges. He has seven moons before he must move on. In that time he tries to guide the two people dearest to him to a stash of his photographs that could expose the brutality of the war.
