Sofia works in a London coffee shop and has left her doctoral studies to look after her mother, Rose, whose paralysis no doctor has explained. They travel to a coastal village in Almería, in southern Spain, where Rose is to be treated by Dr Gomez, a charismatic man whose methods and motives are open to question. In the heat, among half-built hotels, Sofia grows bolder: she is stung by jellyfish, falls under the spell of Ingrid, a seamstress, and pushes back against her mother's hold on her. She also visits her estranged father in Athens, where he has started a second family. Through mother and daughter the novel looks at the strange, sometimes monstrous sides of womanhood.
