Jack has just turned five. He was born in Room, an eleven-foot-square space with a single skylight and a door that is always shut, and has never left it: he eats, sleeps, plays and learns there with Ma, and believes that only the two of them and the objects around them are real, everything on television being made up. At night Ma shuts him in the wardrobe before a man Jack calls Old Nick visits. To Jack, Room is home; for Ma it is a cell in which she has been kept captive for seven years, and where her love has built a whole childhood for her son. As his curiosity grows and her desperation deepens, she knows they cannot stay, and she tells him that a world exists outside.
