Theo Byrne studies the possibility of life on other worlds and, since his wife's death, has been raising their nine-year-old son, Robin, alone. Robin is warm and funny, determined to rescue the planet, and he paints endangered animals for hours. Yet his school is about to throw him out for striking a classmate with a metal flask. Theo refuses to put him on psychoactive drugs. Instead he takes Robin on imagined journeys to other planets, and he tries an experimental treatment based on neurofeedback that trains the boy on recordings of his late mother's brain. The book asks how a parent can tell a child the truth about a planet in danger.
