Nick Platt, a young Englishman, works as a lawyer in Moscow in the early 2000s and does not look too closely at the dubious deals that cross his desk; his evenings belong to the city's bars and clubs, in a Russia where pleasure and despair, generosity and graft sit side by side. One autumn day he chases off a thief trying to grab a bag from two sisters, Masha and Katya, and the three become companions on Moscow's glittering night circuit. Through the long winter Nick falls in love with Masha and, step by step, lets go of his own scruples, drawn into a game of deceit whose victims will be found only when the snow thaws.
