Nao spent her childhood in California, but after her father lost his job the family moved back to Tokyo, where classmates torment her and her father sinks into depression. Resolved to end her life, she first wants to write down the life of Jiko, a Buddhist nun more than a century old and her great-grandmother, and starts a diary in a maid café. On a remote island in British Columbia, a writer named Ruth comes upon the diary in a freezer bag, along with old letters and a watch, perhaps carried over by the 2011 tsunami. Nao's pages alternate with Ruth's chapters as Ruth tries to find out what became of the girl, and the two lives begin to touch.
