Paul O'Rourke runs a dental practice in New York, where his office manager is his former girlfriend and his devout hygienist wonders why he has no faith. He is full of contradictions: a Luddite hooked on his smartphone, a dentist who smokes, a Red Sox fan thrown by their victories, an atheist not quite ready to give up on God. Then someone starts posting as him on a website and on social media, and uses those accounts to speak for the Ulms, who trace their line to Amalek in the Old Testament and claim Paul as one of their own. As he tries to discover who has taken his identity and why, he has to face his own history and wonder whether the online Paul is the better one.
