For years Barbara Covett has taught history at St George's, a solitary woman with almost no friends. Sheba Hart, newly hired to teach art, is charming and unguarded, and Barbara decides at once that the two of them are meant to be close, guarding the friendship jealously. When it emerges that Sheba has been sleeping with an underage boy from the school, reporters swarm, and Barbara casts herself as her protector, setting down her own record of events to vindicate her. Yet that record reveals as much about its narrator's loneliness, possessiveness and wishes as it does about Sheba.
