In 1851 a powerful employer called the Commodore sends his hired killers, the brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters, from Oregon City to murder Hermann Kermit Warm at his gold claim outside Sacramento. Charlie drinks hard, kills easily and guns down whoever blocks his path; Eli is gentler, falls in love on the road and begins to wonder whether this is the life he wants, and for whom he is living it. The brothers bicker their way across a thousand miles of frontier, among losers, cheats and drifters. When they reach California they find that their target is an inventor with a formula that could make them all rich.
