Sadie Smith is thirty-four, American and ruthless. Dismissed from the FBI amid accusations of entrapment, she now takes work from private-sector clients whose identities stay vague. Her latest job brings her to an isolated part of rural France, where she is to work her way into Le Moulin, a collective of militant environmentalists around Pascal Balmy who are thought to have sabotaged machinery at a dam project. To get close to Pascal she first starts an affair in Paris with a film-maker he knows. The group's thinking comes from Bruno Lacombe, an old man who has spent years living in caves and sends them long emails about Neanderthals and early humans. Sadie is convinced she is in control of everyone she watches, until she finds herself pulled between the deep past and what is to come.
