Since his father died, Chinonso has lived alone with the chickens he raises in Umuahia, Nigeria. Crossing a bridge one day, he finds a woman on the point of jumping and, to show her how far she would fall, throws a pair of his finest birds over the edge. The woman, Ndali, from a prominent family and in despair over a broken engagement, is touched, and they fall in love. Her relatives reject him for his lack of education, and to win them over he gives up his land and everything he owns for a place at a college in Cyprus, arranged by an old acquaintance, only to find that nothing there is as promised. The story is told by his chi, the spirit that in Igbo belief guards each person, speaking as his advocate.
