Dr Faraday has made a modest, respectable living as a country doctor in Warwickshire. One summer after the war he is summoned to Hundreds Hall, the great house that dazzled him on a visit at the age of ten, when his mother was in service there. The Ayres family have owned it for two hundred years, but the stonework is falling apart, the grounds are overgrown and furniture is being sold to keep going. The household is the widowed Mrs Ayres; her son Roderick, an RAF airman injured in the war who is struggling to run the farm; and her plain, practical daughter Caroline. Faraday calls often and grows close to Caroline. Then odd things begin to happen, and he has to ask whether the Ayreses are haunted by more than the decline of their class.
