At school Tony and his small group of friends took in Adrian, more serious and cleverer than the rest of them. Hungry for books and for sex, they got through their last years at school together trading jokes, gossip and clever remarks, and swore to remain friends for life. Decades later Tony is retired. He has had a career, a marriage and a calm divorce, stays on good terms with his former wife and with his daughter, and believes he has never meant to harm anyone. Then a lawyer's letter brings him a mysterious legacy, and as a past he had hardly thought about comes back to him, he has to question his memory and revise his idea of what kind of man he is.
