The man who now calls himself Snowman, once Jimmy, sleeps up a tree in a filthy bedsheet, starving by degrees in a jungle that recently was a city, perhaps the only human left. He mourns Crake, his closest friend, and Oryx, whom both men loved and whose voice still mocks him. Before the catastrophe he lived among the clever and wealthy in walled compounds run by biotechnology firms, shielded from the disorder of the pleeblands where everyone else lived. Now he seems to be in charge of the Children of Crake, green-eyed and too perfect, and he sets off through the overgrown ruins to understand how corporate gene-tinkering wrecked the world so quickly, and what part he played in it.
