Walker came through D-Day but carries the war inside him and cannot face going back to his home in Nova Scotia. Hoping to lose himself, he heads for the big cities of the United States, above all Los Angeles, whose lights first dazzle him. Working as a junior reporter, he meets the city's violence, poverty and racism, and a story on homelessness takes him to San Francisco. Back in Los Angeles he finds whole blocks demolished for freeways and parking lots, and the noise of falling buildings brings back his memories of battle. Told in verse, the book follows a decent man trying to recover his own capacity for kindness while America grows paranoid, divided and corrupt.
