Five generations of the Ghosh family share the floors of one house in Calcutta. The patriarch Prafullanath ages at the top; his eldest son struggles to keep the overstretched family paper business going; and the widow of the youngest son lives with her children in a single room below. In 1967 the grandson Supratik, caught up in extremist politics, disappears to rouse peasants against moneylenders and landlords, and his letters about the movement run between chapters of the family's story. At home, jealousies turn poisonous, the business collapses and secrets surface, while the city itself is shaken by the unrest of the late 1960s.
