On 3 March 1947 Archibald Isaac Ferguson is born, the son of Rose and Stanley. From that one beginning the novel follows four separate, simultaneous lives: four boys with the same genes who are and are not the same person, each Ferguson growing up along a different path. Their childhoods and youths take in summer camp, first heartbreak over Anne-Marie, an education shaped by a beloved aunt, Mildred, and by the books Ferguson devours, while the public events of the age press in on each of them: the Kennedy years, Martin Luther King's campaigns and Lyndon Johnson's presidency, on into the 1970s and across the fractured landscape of twentieth-century America.
