Roseanne McNulty, said to have been a great beauty in her Sligo youth, has spent about half a century in the Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital and is nearly a hundred. With the old building due to be pulled down, she starts writing a testimony of herself, recalling her childhood with her father, a cemetery superintendent drawn into the civil war of 1922, and hides the pages under a floorboard. Her psychiatrist, Dr Grene, who has to decide which patients will be moved and which released, keeps a commonplace book of his own and begins to look into her past, including the papers of a parish priest. Their two accounts of her early life, her marriage and her committal do not agree.
