Willie Dunne is not yet eighteen when, in 1914, he leaves Dublin, his family and his sweetheart to enlist with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on the Western Front. The slaughter there is beyond anything he could have pictured; what sustains him are letters from home and the jokes and loyalty of the other Irish lads, caked in mud and dying around him. Meanwhile the Easter Rising splits Ireland, and the Irish soldiers serving the British Crown are left torn over where their loyalty lies. On leave in Dublin, Willie finds his world divided by conflicts much nearer home, yet he knows he has to return to the front.
