Joe Coppock, an inward-looking boy with a lazy eye, lives by himself in a Cheshire house. He loves his comics, his collection of birds' eggs and his prized marbles. One day a wandering rag-and-bone man and healer named Treacle Walker comes down off the moor and makes a strange swap with him, giving him an empty medicine jar plus a donkey stone in return for his pyjamas and the shoulder blade of a lamb. A mysterious friendship grows between them, and Joe is drawn into a realm beyond anything he has known, where myth, folklore and the stories people tell themselves blur, and time itself becomes fluid.
