Olive Wellwood keeps her large Fabian household afloat with fairy tales, and she also writes a secret, separately bound story for every one of her children. Her eldest son Tom comes across Philip, a runaway, drawing in the cellars of the South Kensington museum, and the boy is swept into the Wellwoods' make-believe life at their sprawling home near Romney Marsh, among wealthy relatives, a museum curator's son and daughter, and the Fludds, the unhappy family of a gifted potter. From 1895 the young people come of age through long Edwardian summers, the boys turning against the adults while the girls hope for lives of their own, while the grown-ups' parties, principles and private longings hide betrayals. Paris, Munich and at last the Somme lie ahead.
