Linda is fourteen, an observant, isolated girl who grew up in a commune with unconventional parents beside a lake in the woods of Minnesota. When a young family moves into the cabin across the water, she befriends the mother, Patra, and begins looking after her four-year-old son, Paul, while the boy's father is away. At school she is caught up in a scandal over a teacher accused of misconduct by a classmate who then takes the accusation back. When the father returns, Linda finds herself shut out of the household she has come to need, and her protective, possessive attachment to Patra grows darker as she fails to read the signs of what is happening inside the family.
