When their father takes a bank job in another city, the four eldest Agwu boys, the youngest nine and the oldest fifteen, start fishing in the Omi-Ala, a polluted river close to the family's house in Akure that they have been told to stay away from. There they meet Abulu, a madman thought to see the future, who calls the eldest, Ikenna, by name and foretells that he will die at the hands of a fisherman. Ikenna grows sure that he will die at a brother's hand; he turns on them and withdraws, and the household falls into turmoil as the prophecy works on the family. The youngest of the four, Benjamin, tells the story, set under military rule.
