Animal was born days before a gas leak from the factory of a foreign company, the Kampani, devastated the city of Khaufpur, and the poison left his spine so bent that he goes on all fours. Now nineteen, profane and obsessed with sex, he scorns pity, lives with Ma Franci, a muddled old French nun, and tells his story into a series of tapes. He falls in with Nisha, the daughter of Somraj, a once-famous singer, and her boyfriend Zafar, who has given up everything to fight the Kampani for justice and to care for the poor. Animal is hopelessly in love with Nisha. When an American doctor opens a free clinic in the slum and the company's lawyers arrive to talk about a settlement, suspicion and hope collide.
