The novel opens with the separate stories of nine people, reaching back to antebellum New York: a family that photographs one chestnut tree every month for generations, a botanist ridiculed for discovering that trees communicate, a computer game designer in a wheelchair, a psychologist, a war veteran, and a student who is electrocuted, briefly dies and afterwards believes she is being called to defend the forests. Each in their own way learns to see the vast, slow world of trees. In the late 1990s their lives converge on the Pacific coast in the struggle against the logging of old-growth redwoods, where some turn from protest to violent resistance.
