Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

United States · Since 1918 · For books in English

Awarded each spring by the Pulitzer Prize Board at Columbia University in New York for distinguished fiction by an American author, preferably dealing with American life, published in the previous calendar year.

The Pulitzer Prizes were founded through the will of the newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer and are administered by Columbia University. The fiction award began in 1918 as the Prize for the Novel and took its present name in 1948, when short-story collections became eligible. Books must be entered by their publishers; a jury reads the entries and nominates finalists, usually three, from which the Pulitzer Prize Board chooses the winner. The board may also decline to give the award, as it did in 2012, and it was shared for the first time in 2023. Finalists have been announced since 1980. Winners are named in the spring together with the other Pulitzer Prizes and receive $15,000.
