King Rao is born in the 1950s in an Andhra Pradesh village, the child of Dalit coconut growers. He goes to study in Seattle, where he meets Margie, later his wife and business partner, and the computers, programs and online network they build make him the best-known technology boss on the planet and lead to a worldwide government run by corporations, whose citizens are called Shareholders. He ends his days in exile on an isolated island near the Washington coast, raising his daughter, Athena, to whom he has given his own memories. Writing from prison as the climate crisis rages, Athena retraces her father's rise and her own path into the resistance.
