In 1911 a farming family is found murdered near the small town of Pluto, North Dakota, with only a baby left alive. A white posse blames the Ojibwe men who came upon the scene and hangs three of them; a fourth, Mooshum, is spared at the last moment. Growing up on the nearby reservation in the 1960s, his granddaughter Evelina hears his stories and falls for Corwin Peace, a rebellious schoolmate, and for a nun who teaches her, without knowing how both are bound up with the lynching. Through her voice and others, across the following century, the novel traces how the families of the hanged men and of the mob have become entangled, while a long-lost violin and the question of who really killed the family keep resurfacing.
