In London in the 1960s, shortly before their wedding, Margaret discovers that John suffers from recurring bouts of depression that shut his mind down for long spells, and she goes ahead with the marriage. They raise three children, Michael, Celia and Alec, in a household strained by John's episodes and by the shortage of money that follows them. Michael, the eldest, is clever, witty and devoted to music, but he inherits his father's dread and comes to lean on Klonopin and other drugs. Across fifty years each of the five takes turns telling the story; they drift apart yet stay bound together, while Celia, Alec and their mother struggle to look after a Michael whose hold on life grows ever weaker.
