Frank Bascombe is sixty-eight, retired from selling houses and living in Haddam, New Jersey, in the weeks before Christmas 2012, after Hurricane Sandy has battered the shore. In four linked narratives, each of which could stand alone, he goes to see the man who bought his former house by the sea, now in ruins; is visited by a black woman who grew up in the house where he lives today; calls on his ex-wife, who has Parkinson's and lives in a care home; and sits with an old friend who is dying. A survivor of prostate cancer, Frank wants mostly to do nothing he doesn't want to do, and his wry, cranky thoughts on ageing, death and the news fill the spaces between the meetings.
