Håkan Söderström, a young Swede, loses sight of his brother Linus at the harbour in Gothenburg as they set out for America, and arrives in San Francisco while Linus sails for New York. With almost no English, he starts east to look for him, but the frontier keeps driving him back toward the Pacific. On the way he meets swindlers, zealots and a few decent people: a saloon keeper who keeps him prisoner, a naturalist hunting a dried-up seabed for the source of all life, a fellow traveller named Asa, a horse called Pingo. After he kills men who attack him, gossip turns him into a legendary outlaw known as the Hawk, a man who goes on growing until he is a giant.
