Wils Ravan is nineteen and finishing high school in a Chicago suburb in the Eisenhower years. His parents' marriage has turned cold, and his father Teddy is stubbornly set on defeating the union men striking at his printing plant. Wils spends his days in a junior job at a Chicago tabloid, learning how routinely city hall is corrupt and how a paper can wreck reputations, and his nights at the debutante parties of the North Shore. At one of them he falls for Aurora Brule, a strong-willed girl whose father, a remote society psychiatrist, carries a harrowing memory. Over one summer Wils moves among these three worlds and begins to see the class lines that run through American life.
