In 1928 Maud Nail, eighteen, lives with her father and her sensitive brother on land allotted to their Cherokee family in rural Oklahoma. Her mother died years ago and her father is often away carousing or on the run, so Maud keeps the household going; when a vengeful neighbour maims the family cow with an axe, it is she who must shoot it. She reads every book she can find and longs for a wider life. While her brother lies ill she begins a romance with Booker Wakefield, a courteous white travelling salesman, but when he goes away without warning she drifts into an affair with a young man from the area.
