It is 1953 on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. Thomas Wazhashk guards the reservation's new factory by night and sits on the Chippewa council, and he sets out to defeat a bill in Congress that would terminate the tribe and its claim to its land, rallying members and writing to politicians. Patrice Paranteau, who insists on her given name rather than Pixie, works at the same plant and keeps her mother and younger brother afloat while fending off her drunken father. When her sister Vera falls silent in Minneapolis, perhaps with a baby, Patrice goes to look for her and meets exploitation and danger in the city. Around them are a young boxer and his mother, Patrice's best friend, and a white teacher in love with her.
