Mustafa al-Zamori, an educated man from Morocco who was sold into slavery and renamed Estebanico by the Spanish, tells his own story. In 1527 he sails with his master, Andrés Dorantes, on the Narváez expedition to Florida, a hunt for gold that greed and poor leadership turn into disaster, and most of the men die. Only four survive, Estebanico and three Spaniards, among them Cabeza de Vaca. For eight years they wander from Florida and Texas into the Southwest, living on the help of Indigenous peoples and becoming healers and storytellers as the line between master and slave fades. Estebanico dreams of freedom and gives the account that the official record left out.
