Marie-Laure lost her sight as a child and was raised in Paris by her father, a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History, who made miniature models of their neighbourhood so she could learn to move through it alone. When the Germans take Paris the two escape to Saint-Malo and the home of her eccentric great-uncle Etienne, who works for the Resistance alongside his housekeeper. In Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his sister Jutta in a children's home outside Essen, obsessed with radio sets; his talent wins him a place at an elite Nazi academy and later in a Wehrmacht team locating secret transmitters. A German sergeant-major searches for a gem her father concealed. In August 1944, under Allied bombardment, their two stories meet.
