Jenny Shimada, a Japanese-American woman of twenty-five, has been on the run since she and the man she loved bombed draft offices in protest against the Vietnam War. A mysterious contact from her radical days asks her to take care of three younger fugitives smuggled out of California. One of them, Pauline, the kidnapped heiress of a San Francisco newspaper fortune, has become famous across the country for taking up her captors' cause. Hiding out on an upstate New York farm, the others train for armed struggle and work fitfully on a book as Jenny runs their errands. As isolation breeds paranoia, Jenny starts to doubt the ideals that drove her, and the group's road leads back west to California.
