Jack and Mabel, in their fifties and without children, have come to the Alaskan frontier in the 1920s to farm cheap land. The labour wears them down, the winter is savage, and their isolation keeps reminding them of the family they never had; their marriage is coming apart. On the first snowy day of the season they shape a little girl from snow, and soon after a fair-haired child starts appearing in the woods. She says her name is Faina, roams the wild country with a fox at her side and seems to live there alone. No neighbour has ever seen her, and Mabel remembers an old fairy tale of a girl made of snow. As Faina becomes part of their lives and they grow to love her like a daughter, the couple try to learn who she really is.
