Near Kearney, Nebraska, by the Platte River where sandhill cranes gather on their migration, Mark Schluter, a twenty-seven-year-old slaughterhouse worker, crashes his truck off a straight country road. He wakes from a two-week coma with Capgras syndrome, convinced that his older sister Karin, who has left her life in Sioux City to care for him, is an impostor. In despair, Karin calls in Gerald Weber, a New York neurologist famous for his popular books on brain cases, whose tests explain nothing and who begins to doubt his own work. Meanwhile Mark's drinking friends seem to know more about the accident than they admit, his aide Barbara is hiding her past, and an unsigned note left at his hospital bedside deepens the mystery of what happened on the road.
