These eight linked stories pass from the elegant homes of Lahore and Islamabad to poor villages of mud houses, and all touch the world of K. K. Harouni, an ageing landowner whose servants, managers and relatives live by a web of favours. An electrician with twelve daughters and a son relies on his wits to keep his job and must face an armed robber; a maid in the Harouni mansion begins an affair with an older servant; a young woman whose Lahore family has come down in the world takes a rich older relative as her lover, sure there will be no price to pay; and a powerful politician falls gravely ill and tries to secure his legacy. Together they portray a feudal order under strain, where women without family or marriage to shield them are most at risk.
