Theo Decker is thirteen when a bomb goes off in the Metropolitan Museum kills his mother, and he emerges from the rubble with The Goldfinch, a small masterpiece by the Dutch painter Carel Fabritius. Deserted by his father, he moves in with a rich schoolfriend and his parents on Park Avenue, where he feels out of place and misses his mother terribly, and the painting becomes his last tie to her. He falls into teenage delinquency together with his friend Boris, and as a grown man moves between wealthy salons and the antiques workshop that employs him, in love with Pippa, whom he glimpsed just before the blast. The painting he keeps hidden pulls him into the art underworld and into growing danger.
